Spasms Past & Present

Gary Cozine has been a Laryngospasm from the very beginning. The Spasms don't get to perform as often as they would like, so in order to fulfill his musical passions, he also sings and plays guitar in a local Twin Cities variety band, Moxie Blue. Gary and his wife, Shelly, also a CRNA, have four college-age children (go Gophers, Bobcats and Green Wave). In their spare time, Gary and Shelly like to travel, cook and hang outdoors. Asked about the impact of being a Spasm on his career, Gary said, "Back in anesthesia school, I could have never
guessed that the Laryngospasms would be my
contribution to the anesthesia arts."
Doug Meuwissen, the bass voice for the group, joined in 1993, a year before the first album was recorded. He graduated from the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia in 1981 and currently works for AAPA in Woodbury, Minnesota. He is also a veteran of Desert Storm and can personally verify that it is very hot in the middle-east! Doug has been active in musical theatre for many years, which has made for an easy transition to the Layngospasms. He is married to Mary Kay and has four children: Amy, Cris, Ken and Pete.
Rich Leyh joined the group in 1998, a month after beginning anesthesia school. It can truly be said that Rich’s entire anesthesia career has been tainted by being a Spasm! Since graduating from school in 2000, Rich has worked at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital, Regions Hospital in St. Paul, and, for the past 6 years, has worked at Lakeview Hospital, in Stillwater, MN. Rich is married to Deb, also a CRNA, and, along with daughters Ellie & Heather, loves to go camping, run, fly his airplane, and dabble in real estate. Rich has a background singing with barbershop quartets & choruses & has a particular affinity for a capella music. Rich says the group really serves to ensure that he doesn’t take life too seriously. “We’re never too busy for a little public humiliation!”

Keith Larson, the most recent addition, joined the group in 1999. He is a graduate of Saint Mary’s University School of Nurse Anesthesia in Minneapolis, MN. Keith works as a nurse-anesthetist in the Twin Cities and is also the co-owner of a locum tenens company. He is married to Dana and has three children: Eric, Sydney and Ramsey.
Keith is a long time veteran of song and stage. He grew up in a musical family, and was the youngest child of four for 12 years until baby sister Jodi came along and stole the coveted spot. The 12 years of youngest child status, however, was enough to solidify Keith’s fondness for being the center of attention and to propel him toward creative performance endeavors.
Vocally, Keith has trained with coaches Bonnie Faber and Emma Small, and has held lead roles in numerous community theatre productions. He is also a professional wedding singer, and performs with the accompaniment of his talented wife Dana.
